Gerald Newcomb
I came to pottery via adult education evening classes in my forties and from day one I was hooked. It had been a hobby off and on over the years but since retiring it has become a passion. I do smoke firing, raku, agate ware, slip casting and piercing, also being a wood turner I try to incorporate that where appropriate. Although great fun, I always seem to come back to my ‘naked linear’ collection the inspiration of which comes from the simple architectural buildings of the Brutalist period and Frank Lloyd Wright.
My preferred clay for throwing is porcelain, I love the purity of it. In general I don’t like to glaze my pieces. I feel that being unglazed enhances the fragility of the pot and allows one to get closer to the texture of the clay. The main thing that I have learnt over my pottery journey is that the more I know the more I realize that every day is a school day.
