Susan Ramsay-Smith’s ceramics practice is underpinned by an ecological approach, sourcing and processing local dug, Weald Clay.

Since completing her Craft MA in 2021 where Susan focused on sourcing, investigating and testing different materials she has relocated to Eastbourne which offers a new seascape with its range of minerals and vistas to experiment with and incorporate into different vessels. 

Susan’s interest for experimenting with naturally occurring clay deposits was stimulated by a studio visit to Danish potter Anne Mette Hjortshøj, on the island of Bornholm. Ramsay-Smith was inspired by how Hjortshøj extracts and processes minerals and clay sourced from the area to make her unique wares. Reflecting on this experience, Susan allows the alchemy and interplay between material and process to inform the outcome of her work.
