Isabel Dickinson
I grew up within a family of creatives and this has played a large part in my exploration of the arts and my interests in being a maker. Specialising in 3-D during my art foundation at UCA Rochester, I was able to explore and develop new techniques and tools, with a newfound mentality towards 3-D form. I furthered my education and graduated in 2015 with a BA Hons in Design Crafts from De Montfort University, Leicester.
I work with Earthenware, porcelain and stoneware and create thrown pieces on the wheel which vary from vases to bowls, pots and dishes. I also do ceramic wall hangers which hang on the wall, and I also do ceramic pieces which are framed in professionally mounted wooden frames.
I am by nature a process-led artist and have a very open approach to the methods I use for my ceramic work, to demonstrate a visually stimulating fusion of colour, surface, pattern, and form. Abstract expressionism has seen my illustrative style transition from detailed work to loud and fluid uses of colour combinations and performative brushwork. The bare vessels become canvases. I like to show a playful side in how I explore my designs, and for my audience to have a sensory experience which opens them to the organic world.
My surroundings, being situated in the North Downs of Kent, are a core influence in my approach to design. Organic forms, seed pods, trees, flowers, and findings I pick up off the ground from the valley below. These natural resources can be incorporated with techniques I’ve learnt, to explore their form.
