I managed to spend three years studying Fine Art in Stoke on Trent in the early 1990’s without ever going near the ceramics studios. I did start collecting and appreciating ceramics while I was there, but didn’t ever have a go myself, concentrating on drawing and painting until 10 years ago when I signed up for a pottery evening class in Gravesend.
I taught Art and Design in Kent and Medway schools for 32 years until retiring to focus on making my pottery and running the Oscar Wilde Society, a literary Society.
Pottery and the past go hand in hand and my pots often have a curvy Victorian feel to them, and are mainly coiled though occasionally wheel thrown and altered. I work from a pottery shed in my garden and have reinterpreted a few historic pots such as the ‘Patience’ teapot as well as making my own work in several styles.
I currently make dark gothic and decadent looking vases as well as bright and cheerful stencilled ones. I also mould tiny skulls and make pinch pots in vivid colours.
